A Brief History of Camden Greenways Inc.
Camden Greenways Inc. began operation in 1993 as the grassroots organization Camden Greenways Working Group, bringing together three neighborhoods in Camden that shared concerns about open space issues, particularly the lands along the Delaware and Cooper Rivers. To address these concerns, the organization created a greenway plan for Camden. This plan was later revised to include the neighborhoods bordering Newton Creek.

With this plan and the persistent advocacy of the Camden Greenways Working Group, the City of Camden adopted some important policy changes that would affect the future of open space and trail development in the city in the years that followed. First, in 1998, the Camden Greenways Plan was incorporated into the City's Master Plan Following this important first step, in 2000, the Camden Greenways Working Group incorporated as a not-for-profit organization, becoming Camden Greenways Inc., with the group's members deciding on a new structure and membership guidelines. The following year, after dozens of meetings and negotiations with residents and businesses, Camden City Council incorporated the Greenway plan into the City's zoning ordinance. This created two new conservation districts and a Stream and River Corridor Protection and an Overlay Zone., Camden Greenways Inc. continued to advocate for the implementation of the plan, promoting; (1) strategies to assure public access to properties designated as part of the Camden Greenway, (2) stewardship of those properties, and (3) the education of City residents as to the benefits of open space and public access to Camden's waterways.
